If my recall is correct, I have read at both the "redbone" and the "melungeon" Family Forums commentary by Larry Keels indicating his grandmother, Alberta Ashworth, was designated "mulatto" on the 1880 Trinty County Census.
Though my original birth certificate has never been located, a family Bible claims I was born at Nigton, TX (Tinity County) on April 28, 1941. A duplicate birth certificate obtained by some family member in 1947 designates both my birth parents as white and my birth place as Lufkin, Angelina County, TX on the same date as the Bible. The current Angelina County records do not confirm this.
I've read the Randy Willis online composition but the court documents I've been able access do not confirm his Indian claim but rather state "mulatto". Have you seen other documentation?
I have seen references to a book called "Trinity County Beginnings" but not the one you mention.
