Thank you for your response. I am descended from people identified by this term in history books. My ancesters were among the earliest settlers in what is now Trinity County, but they all migrated in the early nineteenth century from western Louisiana. Others have told me of the continued use of this term in Louisiana. Various descendants of the Ashworth, Dial, Perkins, Gibson, Jolly, etc. families are sharing our study of the origin of this term on The Redbone Family Forum. If you have more specific information on your experience with the term that you would be willing to share, we will appreciate it.
