JAS.CARTER: TRAVIS CO. SHERIFF'S DEPUTY?

My ancestor, JAMES CARTER, was said to have been a deputy in Travis County when he lived in Webberville in the 1850s and 1860s. I would like to find documentation about this, other than the book on McLennan or Coryell County history where I learned of it. He moved to McLennan County about 1870.
Please contact me at hitt@flash.net or nannyhitt@yahoo.com.
