I'm currently researching the family of JOHN MARSHALL ANDERSON (1836-1898), who along with others, left Lincoln county, Missouri in 1881 - headed to Texas. One account of their journey was published in the Abilene Reporter News sometime in 1944. Efforts to locate the article are ongoing. It is known that the family stopped briefly in Panola County, Texas (near Haysland) during their journey, and eventually arrived in November of 1881. They settled in South Taylor County, very near Bluff Creek and lived in a dugout until more permanent shelters could be built. Oral history states that John Marshall ANDERSON helped establish the community of Moro, Texas and was a successful sheep rancher.

Research also indicates that John Marshall ANDERSON was the son of Elijah ANDERSON of Lincoln county Missouri. Elijah ANDERSON was a native of Fauquier County, Virginia and migrated to Missouri, settling in Hurricane Township, in the 1830's.

Elijan ANDERSON was thought to be a bootmaker, and an admirer of Supreme Court Justice, John Marshall. Oral history states that Elijah made boots for Justice Marshall and eventually named his son (John Marshall ANDERSON) for the Chief Justice. This occured in Virginia.

Part of this research is focused on the family connections between the ANDERSON, ELLIOTT and KEMPER families who had connections in Virginia, possibly migrated to Missouri together, then eventually ended up in Taylor County, Texas.

John Marshall Anderson's wife was named Catherine or "Kate." Her last name is still unknown as of this posting. Current research is ongoing, and it is thought that her last name could be either: Wackerle, Goble, or Leppert.

1. John Marshall "Marsh" ANDERSON (Elijah1) was born April 26, 1836 in Virginia and died September 4, 1898 in Taylor County, Texas and buried in Bluff Creek Cemetery, Moro, Taylor County, Texas. He married Catherine "Kate" about 1859 in Illinois. She was born September 29, 1836 in Illinois and died October 8, 1914 in Bluff Creek Cemetery, Moro, Taylor County, Texas.

Children of John Marshall "Marsh" ANDERSON and Catherine "Kate":

i. 2. Helena Frances "Lena" ANDERSON was born October 2, 1861 in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois and died December 2, 1927 in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. She married Moliere M. MAYFIELD.

ii. 3. Mary Margaret "Mollie" ANDERSON was born October 2, 1863 in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois and died April 24, 1943 in Bluff Creek Cemetery, Moro, Taylor County, Texas. She married Jefferson Davis ELLIOTT.

iii. 4. Sarah Evalyn "Evvy" ANDERSON was born September 13, 1866 in Monroe, Lincoln county, Missouri and died March 5, 1946 in Bluff Creek Cemetery, Moro, Taylor County, Texas. She married Jesse Preston JACKSON.

iv. 5. Susan ANDERSON was born September 1871 in Troy, Lincoln county, Missouri (or Estimated 1870.) She married Harry J. SHUPE.

v. Fredrick ANDERSON was born 1873 in Missouri (or Estimated 1874.)

vi. 6. John Henry "Jack" ANDERSON was born June 9, 1878 in Missouri. He married Eleanor CADE.

vii. 7. Chester "Chess" Eugene ANDERSON was born January 6, 1881 in Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri and died October 2, 1946 in Big Spring, Howard County, Texas. He married Laura T. MCCOY.

The above family group sheet represents a work in progress and by no means should be considered a final product. It is provided in hopes that a descendant might recognize a familiar name and be interested in exchanging information.

I'm most interested in hearing from ANYONE who may be researching these families and who is also interested in comparing notes. I have lots of information on them once they arrived in Texas in the form of photographs, letters, etc... but very little on the family in Missouri, Illinois, and Virginia.

Happy Holidays !
