Richard,
Carter is a well known name in the Steamboat Mountain, Buffalo Gap, Mulberry Canyon region. There is one publication you might find interesting. "Butman Methodist Camp and Mulberry Canyon" written by Darris Egger Sr. and while I don't know if they are still on sale, there are copies in the Abilene Public Library and in the libraries of the three local universities. Here is a quote from page four of his book, "In 1874 Carter and Grounds drove 3700 head of cattle into Mulberry Canyon and settled there. Their headquarters was on what is now Tom Russom's place." Other Carters mentioned in the book were Orion W. Carter and Will Carter.

I did not find him listed in the Buffalo Gap, White Church, or Tuscola Cemeteries but he may mave moved further west into Nolan County as the Mulberry Canyon area became more heavily settled and less open range was available.
