Thank you, Kathleen for your excellent suggestion! I did check on that, and found indeed that a Silas Campbell from Ohio did serve in the Mexican War, even in Mier and Roma! I thought I hit gold, until I followed up on him and found that this was a different Silas Campbell, one who was mustered out at the end of the war, went home, married, and died an old man in Spotsylvania, VA. I lost a year following up the wrong lead. Oh, well...
