On the 1870 census it shows Thomas owned land. Check out land, tax and even probate records. What happened to that land? I love land records, you never know what will pop up in them.

On tax records if Thomas disappears off the tax records and Mary shows up, then she is a widow. She might remarry and that sometimes throws off the research.
