I have a booklet put together by Betty Meadows. If you would like to e-mail me.....feel free. I am pdaye@webtv.net. It says that there are a couple of stories about John Ashley's death. One is that he was shot and another that he died of pneumonia which I believe. Since he was buried in La and not Tx. They herded horse and took them to La where they were trained and sold.John's wife Betty took their children and a marker in a wagon from Cherokee, Tx to Sarepta, La where he had been buried. His grave is in Blocker's Chapel Cem. By 1900 Betty had married Riley Clark, but the marriage may not have lasted long because in the 1910 census she was working in Llano. The son John Ross Dean has another story about being shot. That is probably the confusion. Hope this helps. PD
