Karen, Thank you so much for the information on the Probate (guardianship?) record for Thomas A. WHETSTONE. This is very puzzling to me. My grandfather, Thomas Anderson Whetstone, was born in Henderson 23 April 1859 to Perry G. and Mary Elizabeth Still WHETSTONE. Perry died in 1862 while serving as Capt. in the CSA army. Mary E. married again (I don't know when), to Ben CURTIS of Rusk County. They had, I am told, four children: James, Joseph, Hattie and Charles. I understand Mary Elizabeth died in 1911 in Rusk County.
At the time of this record (1873) my grandfather would have been 14 1/2 years old. His sister, Sue Emily, was 16 and not yet married (she married John Wesley Boswell Gray in 1877.
No, I haven't seen any census records of this family. The Perry WHETSTONE family should show parents and both children in the 1860 census, perhaps the mother and both children---or mother with husband CURTIS in the 1870 census.I don't know how to find census records online, so if they are available to you, I would greatly appreciate knowing what they contain.
I had never heard that Thomas A. was not living with his mother in his youth.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
