An old Indian path went from Natchitoches, LA to Nacodoches, TX through Robertson Co. to San Antonio,TX. This was also used by the Spanish. A part of this road would be a logical route to the family's goal in Robertson Co.

As for WHY - After the Civil War the economic and social conditions were very bad in southern and border states.
Although most of the land in Robertson Co. had been claimed by the 1800's the land was not fully developed. Land was relatively cheap as some of the earlier residents (my kin) were selling or leaving their land to move further west in Texas.
