Kentucky to Robertson Tx. 1880, WHY????

I am seeking information about the probable migration route a Ky. family might have taken to reach Robertson Co.Texas, about 1878 to have been in 1880 Robetson Co.Tx. census.
I am curious as what the reason would have been to leave established family land and home and relocate in Robetson Co. I have read the free land articles. But, does anyone know what the path would have been from Ky.???? And, does anyone know the length of time such a trip would have taken with a family and presumably, livestock?
