By now you may have your information, but if not, his death certificate shows he was "removed" to MO to be buried. You might look for an obit there, also. He must have had family ties in that county.

TX Dth Idx 1890-1976 -- http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?..#w=;p=2;c=1320964;t=searchable -- You can view digitized copy of original death record, see more details, make copies and look for others, too.

Name: James Leroy Phelps
Death date: 26 Aug 1958
Death place: Amarillo, Potter, Texas
Gender: Male
Race or color (on document): White
Age at death: 82 years
Estimated birth year:
Birth date: 01 Dec 1875
Birthplace: Missouri
Marital status: Widowed
Spouse's name:
Father's name: Unk
Father's birthplace:
Mother's name: Unk
Mother's birthplace:
Occupation: Marshall-Dept., Law Enfo.
Residence: Stratford, Sherman, Texas
Cemetery name: Deepwater Cemetry
Burial place: Deepwater, Missouri
Burial date: 27 Aug 1958
Additional relatives:
Film number: 2115590
Digital GS number: 4167375
Image number: 1050
Reference number: 47216
Collection: Texas Deaths, 1890-1976

There is a Deepwater in Henry Co, MO. Go to the Henry Co, MO GenWeb site -- http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mohenry/henryco.html -- Click on Cemeteries and click on Deepwater Cemetery. James is buried there, also a G.A. Phelps, dates similar to his.

If you type in Phelps in their search feature there are 75 matches. You might want to take the time to go through them slowly, see if any family names pop out.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
