I have been reading a lot of your post in the past on this subject. Unbeknown to many, this family of Helton filed several applications to the Guion Miller, Cherokee Rolls. I am going to add one of them here and you can go to the Helton Family Genealogy Forum and find another one there.

I have run the family back to Sumter District in SC and found a William there that is perfect for the father of William Joseph Helton of Monroe Co. Alabama. All of the applications say that is where he is from. Here is another application for the 1907 Guion Miller Roll.

Certificate under oath as to the Indian Lineage of I.M. Helton, sworn to by W.W. Davis.

This is to certify that I.M. Helton was one third Indian of the Eastern Cherokee Tribe. His Indian blood was through his father, Wm Helton who was the son of a Cherokee Indian doctor of the said tribe. The full-blood Indian doctor being named in English, Wm Helton as was his half-blood son Wm Helton was from a branch of the Cherokee Tribe in NC. He married Betsy Moore in South Carolina and moved to Alabama with her. Both the Wm Heltons, father and son are dead, and I.M. Helton of Flomaton, Alabama is the son of the younger Wm. Helton. My own mother was a half-sister to the younger Wm. Helton. After the death of the Indian Doctor my grand father Lee married th said Betsy Moore Helton an it is by an acquaintance with our family history that I know of the facts herein stated.
