Pat, Elizabeth was actually my paternal great grandmother. My father was Earl Edward Courmier, b. 9/27/1916 in Vinton, La, d. 5/16/1978 in Sulfur, La. His mother, my grandmother, was Birdie Mary Stroud Courmier, b. /15/1878 in Orange, Tx, d. 11/2/1964 in Sulfur, La. Her mother was Sarah Elizabeth Spencer Stroud Reed, b. 3/29/1863 unknown location, d. 9/28/1930 in Vinton, La. She married first W.H. Stroud on 5/11/1878 in Orange, Tx. I have been unable to find any proof of his death and since it happened before my grandmother's birth, she either didn't know or failed to pass on the information to me (or maybe she did and I have forgotten). Her second marriage was to Joseph Stump Reed. They were married 3/27/1879. He lived in Vinton, La, Elizabeth went there to help care for his wife and infant son during his wife's illness, she didn't survive and after her death Elizabeth and Joseph, each with an infant from their previous marriages, were married.
From Elizabeth's death certificate, I learned that her parents were A. W. Spencer from Mississippi and Lucy Smith, also from Mississippi. I have not been able to find any records on A. W. Spencer at all. They would have been living in Orange, Tx in 1878. I found Lucy Smith Spencer in the 1880 census, living with another daughter in Vernon Parish, La, at that time she was 50 years old and according to the census was born in Alabama.
I do remember that my grandmother told me that her father's name was Henry Stroud, so he must have used his middle name. I was also told by my grandmother that one of her uncles had a photography studio in Orange, Tx. I have a cousin who has an old family photograph and stamped on the back was 'Spencer Photography Orange, Texas'. However, I have been told by an historical group in Orange that there was never a Spencer Photography studio in Orange, Tx.
Thanks again for the help. Earline
