Matlock/Dawson, 1864, Nacogdoches Co, TX

I recently learned of a first marriage for James Mansfield Matlock of Rusk co, Tx. He is said to have married ELIZA DAWSON, abt 1864, as a 'marriage of convience' during the civil war. Reportedly, his captain insisted the marriage be annulled. (Haven't figured out why.) At any rate, James Mansfield later married MARTHA JANE BATES. Then, abt 1870,
apparently the state did not recognize the annullment, so James and Martha weren't really married. James and Eliza were apparently divorced and he remarried Martha.

These marriages took place in three different counties. RUSK, NACOGDOCHES, AND CHEROKEE. The time frame is 1864-1871. If anyone has
any information on Eliza Dawson, please contact me.

(James and Martha are buried in the Gatlin-Matlock cemetery in Mt.
Enterprise, Rusk, Tx.)
