Newspapers in Montgomery County

Does anyone know what newspapers in Montgomery County were issused in or around 1848. Looking for information over the death of the first sheriff in that county, John Smith. He was also a defender at San Jacinto. His wife was Catherine Gillett and had four children, Samual , Jane, Catherine Ann, and Isabell. I have heard he was shot but can not find any information to confirm the fact.............I feel there should be something written some where about his death. His wife also died in or around the same time..........Left four small children to brother of wife......Any help would be appreciated.
