Edward H. Dickson/1860's/Milam Co, Texas

Does anyone have any clues to what happened to Edward H. Dickson? Edward was the son of William Bryant Dickson and Emily Cotton (Dickson). He left Jackson County, Florida and headed west. Have copies of two letters he wrote to the family in Florida. One of the letters was mailed from Milam County, Texas. He was born around 1848 and was not married when he left Florida. In one of the letters he mentioned that he was a member of Sons of Tamarance. Does anyone have information on what this organization might have been? He mentioned a Tamarance festival that he was going to attend or had attended. Any help or clues would be appreciated.
