Dear Ted,
Your Great-Great Grandparents were William Mathew Reese & Mary Jane (Harvin/Harbin) Reese. They were from Mt Mourne, Iredell Co., North Carolina. Then to Sumter Co., SC where he worked as an overseer.
Your Great Grandparents were Albert Wallace Reese & Arminta D. (Donaldson) Reese. They were the parents of eleven children. Their youngest child, Harvin Donaldson Fisher Reese was blessed by having all of his genealogy given in his name... just as a true Welshman should be. The Reese name is of Welsh origin and spelled RHYS. Their seventh child was Albert Wallace Reese who married Minnie Mae Bullock. Albert & Minnie were the grandparents of Dr. Travis Reese who wrote a warm & sentimental memoir of his grandparents, entitled "Minnie & Albert"; it is one of my treasured possessions.
Your Grandfather, whom you know, Marcus Matthew Reese, was their second child. He was born 9 Aug 1880 and died 20 June 1966 in Cotulla. He did not pass away on 12 July 1986. This can be confirmed by the Death Cert. & Social Security Index. Please see message from Jennifer Reed which is in error. Marcus married Lillie Edelle Lantrip on 19 February 1908 in Milam County, Texas.
Marcus & Lillie were your mother Norma Alma Reese's parents. She blessed you with the middlename of Reese. You can be proud of it and your Reese heritage.
I have found that your father passed away on 29 March 1980. Was he buried at Cotulla or Liberty Community?
Your G-G-Grandfather was the first of our family to come to Texas. His brother, James Harvey Reese, a "Roll of Honor" Civil War soldier, was my Great-Grandfather. My Grandfather was Robert Mc. Reese, born in 1870. Due to the influence of his Uncle Mathew Reese, my Grandfather Robert Reese came to Texas about 1898 and settled in Milam County. Through the years the descendants drifted apart & few know each other.
I hope this helps some. If you have any questions, please email me at my address: reesemichael@juno.com.
