Jerome (or Joseph) Riley Cooper, TX

Seeking info on my g grandfather Jerome (or Joseph) Riley Cooper, b. Jan. 1859, m. Sarah Ann (Sally) Mosley 5-24-1893, in Canadian, Hemphill Co., TX, at which time he was working in Old Mobeetie; sometimes referred to as "Hide Town." Shortly thereafter, they moved to Miami, TX, in Roberts Co., and Joe served two terms as the Sheriff of Roberts Co. They had 4 children; i.e., Dolly Jane (Janie) Elizabeth, George,Lorene (my grandmother) and Joann. Sally died in 1926 and is buried in Llano Cemetery, Amarillo, Potter Co., TX. Joe Cooper is shown on the 1900 census for Roberts Co., TX, as being a "freighter", b. TX Jan. 1859 (he was 42 in 1900). Shortly after the census was taken in 1900, Joe abandoned his family and disappeared. It was rumored that he went to work for a ranch somewhere in the Panhandle (probably the J.A. Ranch), but the family never heard from him again.

Whatever happened to "Old Joe Cooper?" Apparently, his parents were from MS & AL. Does anyone know their names, dates of birth, etc.? Does anyone know if Joe Cooper had any siblings? All information and assistance will be appreciated.
