Michelle, you may be thinking of the requirement for early settlers to buy land. Then they were required to be Catholic and to marry in the Catholic church. Many professed to be Catholic, whether they were or not. Also, many were married twice, once by a Protestant minister if one was available, and also by a Catholic priest "for the record".
