Jesse Leroy Johnson (1894-1973) was the son of John Robert Johnson (1865-1905) who had married in 1892 to Elizabeth S. “Lizzie” Alford (1875-1904). Though Jesse had certainly knew that he was related to Jewel Earl Johnson (1903-1981) of Shelby County, husband to Lennie Evelyn "Eva" Hutto (1903-1985), though Jesse they were related on the Hutto side, he didn’t quite know how he and Jewel were related, and was of the belief that perhaps his father was maybe a brother to Jewel’s father, Benjamin Milam Johnson (1838-1915).

Not that he lived lone enough to learn how they were truly related, the 1870 Census enumerated Jesse's father, John R. Johnson, together with his mother, Mary E. (Barkeloo) Johnson (1842-1917), the widow of James Lockert Johnson (1829-1862), and gave John’s relationship to Milam Johnson as a nephew.

Milam’s mother, Rachel Denicy Lockert (1808-1884), the widow of Alvey R. Johnson (1803-1862) of Shelby County, was sister to Mary Jane (Lockert) Barkeloo (1824-1854), widow of John R. Barkeloo (1817-1848), late of Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as the mother-in-law to Mary Jane’s only child, Mary E. Barkeloo. Mary and her husband, James L. Johnson had one child together, a daughter, Mary Jane “Mollie” Johnson (1861-1904), who in 1883 married to Willis Jefferson Owens (1861-1913).

Not that anyone today knows the exact details, but Mary E. Johnson also had a son (evidently out of wedlock), the above John Robert Johnson (1865-1905). John had two sons: Jesse and John Robert Johnson Jr. (1899- dsp1946). Jesse Johnson also had two children: former Shelby County Judge John Thomas “Johnnie” Johnson (1916-1990), and Bessie Lee (Johnson) McNeil (1926-1990); each of whom left descendants.

More information about Alvey R. Johnson is available at Texas State Historical Association’s Handbook of Texas On-line:
