Actually I do use Ancestry's census index sometimes, just can't view the record because I don't have the subscription. HQ only indexes head of households and you have to match the spelling exactly. On one of those census records the name looks like Blockman, so I went to HQ and used that spelling and found them.LOL
I use Family Search for the 1850 census index as HQ hasn't indexed years of 1830, 1840 and 1850. They have the digitized census records for those years, just no index. I have to work both ends against the middle to find what I want.
Check with your local public libraries, see if one of them subscribes to HQ. But, if you have a subscription to Ancestry, you're in like Flynn anyway.
