I have some information on Jordon "Doc" Patterson Smith as he is my 2nd great-grandfather. He was born December 1854 in Cooper, Missouri to George Payne Smith and either a Margaret "Unknown Last Name" possibly Priest or Mary Louisa Ellis(still not sure but a story suggests the first died in childbirth after giving birth to twins and he had a twin brother, Miller "Cap" Payne Smith but dates seem too close). Anyway I found him in the 1880 census in Lincoln, Nebraska in "The Hospital for the Insane". After he was released after serving 7 years in prison, he moved up to Montana and settled there. He married Mary Alice Jackson in 1896 up in Glasgow, Valley, Montana. I found a 1900 census that places him in Sprindale, Valley, Montana. I have a copy of his death certificate that says he died in Culbertson, Montana on January 17, 1908 from a heart attack.

The Nebraska Supreme Court cases are available online Smith vs. State which show how he escaped most charges after changing venues twice.

If anyone has any additional info I would appreciate it greatly, as most of what I have found has been in the last week.

P.S. The family story before finding this info was that he shot a man who had a shotgun pointed at him in self defense and served 7 years(no one knew where it occurred) and that he became a sheriff up in Montana, which I haven't found anything on that either.

Again thanks for any help you can provide
