Need help re: Edward H Silliman, died 13 Jan 1942 in Brownsville

I am searching for details about why my Great Grandfather, Edward Hubbard Silliman was living and eventually died in Brownsville, TX. He abandoned my Great Grandmother & 4 children in Michigan, and in my father's generation the topic was basically taboo, still too very painful for my grandmother to speak about. So my dad and his sisters all told me they had no details about EH Silliman to share with me.

At one point he lived with his grown son in NY, then ended up in the South. I eventually tracked him down to Brownsville. Why Brownsville??! Family story is that he spent some time in jail? prison? for stealing luggage at a train station.

His Death Certificate lists his residence as the DelWalt Hotel, Brownsville, but there is no street address so I cannot find the enumeration district in the just released 1940 census. He died in Mercy Hospital and Any help with details about the DelWalt Hotel, and maybe where to look for prison records would be appreciated.
Thank You!!
