agricultural taxes for 1860 and l870

How can I find if my ancestor, William Berry Smith, paid any agricultural taxes for the above years in Texas or were people taxed on farms or livestock. ? He died in the l870's Bosque Co.( where he received a league and labor of land ) but can't locate him after the l850 census in Lavaca Co. We don't know if he actually lived on his land but did distribute it to children before he died.
Thanks for any help.
Barbara
