Jeremiah Pitts of Sumter, SC (b. abt 1777, d 1841) was my great-great grandfather. My great aunt Daisy Yeadon and aunt Daisy Pitts Propst wrote a family history of the Pitts - Yeadon families. The following is an excerpt:
Excerpt from PITTS FAMILY HISTORY, by Daisy Yeadon and Daisy Pitts Propst
The following two Pitts men came to South Carolina around 1790 from Pennsylvania or Virginia:
A. John Pitts married ? He had two daughters and one son.
I. Sarah Ann Pitts married (m.) a Felder and had one daughter, Rebecca.
II. Rebecca A. Pitts
III. Jeremiah Pitts, m. Martha W. Barnes on 12/12/1822.
This is all we know of this family.
B. Jeremiah Pitts settled in Stateburg, SC. Born (b.) abt. 1777, Died (d.) on 5/17/1841. Married Valentine Brunson who was the daughter of Isaac Brunson and Suzanne Ellenten (or Ellender). Valentine died 1827 in Athens, GA, of lead poisoning in a newly painted carriage while on a trip with Jeremiah to take their grandson, Lucius Pitts Loring, to his mother and stepfather, Edmund Lane, in Alabama. Valentine is buried in Athens, GA. Jeremiah may be buried at High Hills Baptist Church. The following are the children of Jeremiah and Valentine.
I. John J. Pitts, settled in Montgomery County, AL.
II. Joseph Middleton Pitts, m. Adelia Amanda Diggs. Died in 1835.
III. George Washington Pitts, d. 1832 in Alabama. Unmarried.
IV. Rebecca Matilda Pitts, Born b. 1797, d. 1835. Married Daniel Loring. Had one son, Lucius Pitts Loring, b. 1821. He is the grandfather of cousin Loring Lee. After Daniel Loring died, Matilda married Edmund Lane and moved to Alabama. Later married Samuel B. Davis. Lucius Pitts Loring was raised by his grandfather.
V. Mary S. Pitts, b. 1799, d. 10/30/1832. Married John M. Lenoir and moved to Alabama.
VI. Dr. James Madison Pitts, b. Sumter County abt 1813, d. after 1880 in Sumter County. Married Mary Aretus Mellette.
Dr. James Madison Pitts was my great grandfather.
