Actually, yDNA testing is the ONLY way we have been able to untangle the many Smith family lines, one from the other, in Smith genealogy research. At SmithConnections.com, we have isolated 66 different Smith family group lines that can not be genetically related to each other. Http://www.smithsworldwide.org/ has even more family group lines than SmithConnections.
The DAR has around 1500 Smith Revo War ancestors in their database. DNA can be used to confirm regular genealogy research as to which of these Smiths are related, and which Smiths come from which particular yDNA haplogroup and family lineage group. You are exactly right that yDNA can not stand alone, and that basic regular research is also required; but a yDNA match can open many doors and assist with tracking a family tree back to the Revolutionary War ancestor and beyond. I wish the DAR would accept yDNA research as another tool for the DAR application process.
