Hi again, cousin, we've both been active lately on the Cole family forum. I'm also a descendant of Charles G. Judkins and Elizabeth Basket.
I don't know of any conclusive proof that Elizabeth Basket and Catherine Basket were sisters, but here's something I ran across in the East Texas Research Center digital archives a while back. Those archives are online and free for everyone.
From a letter written by Dr. Robert Donnell Bone to his wife Griselda Minerva Burk dated 2 Sep 1862 and posted from Arkadelphia, Arkansas (Clark County) while Dr. Bone was in the Confederate service:
"Jim Paine & Bill Judkins are gone down to Big Jim Paine's-"
I'm guessing that Bill Judkins is William H. Judkins born abt 1840 in Alabama, son of Charles G. Judkins. I'm not sure who Jim Paine is, but Big Jim Paine is without a doubt James Claudius Buchannon Paine. "J. C. B. Paine" appears on the 1860 census of Clark County, Arkansas, born abt 1825 in Alabama, with wife Mary E. and children Marthy J. age 12 b. Alabama, Chism F. age 9 b. Texas, Lenora age 5 months, etc. He must be the same person as "James Payn" on the 1850 Nacogdoches census with wife Mary and child Martha.
I think the letter is saying that Bill Judkins and Jim Paine were making a side trip to visit the family of James Claudius Buchannon Paine while they were in the Confederate service and happened to be stationed nearby in Clark Couty, Arkansas. My argument is, why would Bill Judkins be doing this unless he had some kind of close relationship with the James C. B. Paine family.
The following Genforum post states "My gg grandmother Katy Baskett had a sister Mary E. who married a James Claudius Buchannon Payne on July 14, 1847 In Lauderdale Co.,AL."
By the way, the Texas death certificate of Lenora Casey born 1859 in Arkansas gives father as John [sic] B. Paine and Mary Ellen Basket. This indicates that Mary's middle initial E might have been for Ellen.
This isn't the conclusive documentary proof we all want, but stuff like this adds good pieces to the jigsaw puzzle.
