It's good you've found them on census records, but you didn't say where they were residing at the time of those censuses, so I tried to find them.

I found John, his wife and their children on the 1930 census, Harris Co, TX, but I did not find W.U. nor Amelia. Now, for John it shows his father was born in AL and his mother in MO, is that what you refer to? Not quite the same, and there are lots of errors in those census records.

1900 census Chickasaw Nation, IT shows William "V" Thompson, wife [name not real clear] and his children. John R. is one of them. As I said I've seen lots of errors in census records, but this one shows wife born in VA and for children it shows their mother was born in MO, so this may be a second wife???? The part that bothers me is it also shows the mother has had 4 children with 3 living, are they out on their own????

1910 census Wharton Co, TX shows John R. wife and 2 small children.

With this information some of the other researchers that browse this forum and have access to more sources, like Ancestry, may be able to help you more.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
