Fought with the Confederate forces during the Civil War. Enlisted in Company C, 15th Northwest Arkansas Infantry on 7-8-1861. Eventually made the rank of Colonel. He was wounded by a minnie ball 10-4-1862 at Corinth, Mississippi. He was captured in the battle and his right leg removed above the knee. Also contracted Smallpox at the same time. He was released in a prisoner exchange and rejoined his unit and was again captured at Vicksburg along with his brother Crockett on 7-4-1863. He was released in another prisoner exchange. He then served as commander of the post in Marshall, Texas until the end of the war.
