Historic Families of Texas - Correction
HERRING and SKILLMAN FAMILY of ALABAMA and TEXAS
We are researching the Floyd W. HERRING and Sarah Lorendia (Skillman) Herring and Isaac Thomas SKILLMAN and Sarah (Boyd) Skillman lines. From what we have found is that Floyd and Lorendia were still in Etowah County, AL in 1880, they went to Grayson Co. TX between 1880 and 1883 .It was in 1879 my Great Grandfather Isaac Thomas Skillman was injured badly, and then his father in-law David Barton Boyd died in 1880.My grandfather Walter Thomas Skillman being only 7 was unable to really help a whole lot, I believe Isaac and Sarah Skillman was forced to have to sell the farm in 1882 to survive. My niece Kathy Grace found a deed in Etowah County, Alabama were they sold the farm in 1882. This was the last time we have seen a paper trail of Isaac, and he NEVER made it back to Etowah County, Alabama.
My Granddad Walter Thomas Skillman said he remembered his father Isaac Thomas Skillman telling them he was leaving for a while and would be back. But sadly this never happened.
His sister Sarah Lorendia (Skillman) Herring and her husband Floyd W. Herring left Etowah County, Alabama between 1880 and 1883 to go to Grayson County, Texas.
I believe it is very possible that her brother Isaac Thomas Skillman went with Lorendia and Floyd to Texas to possibly start new work and a new life, since they had to sell the farm.
Lorendia being the oldest child was like a mother to the younger kids including Isaac, and the family was very close due to the many hardships they had endured. So I firmly believe Isaac went to Texas with her and Floyd.
I wish I knew what drew them there – was it gold, maybe jobs in the coal mines?
Most of the descendants of Isaac Thomas Skillman and Sarah Parston Boyd still remain in Etowah and Blount Counties, Alabama today.Somewhere between Etowah County, Alabama and Grayson County, Texas lies a family mystery lost to time and lost memories.
We are very deeply thankful for cousin Carol Sue (Herring) Clem and her husband Earl, and my niece Kathy Grace, for their help and support in this Genealogy quest. And my special wife Reba Cobbs Skillman for all she has done in supporting and helping me.
Anyone in TEXAS or of the HERRING and SKILLMAN Families that might have any help or advice on this, it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much, Danny J. Skillman
