Jeff Alvis m Sarah (McGeHee?) TN to Texas about 1860
Several years ago I received information from a lady named Barbara Lee, then living in Tampa, FL, about the descendants of Sarah (McGeHee?)Alvis (wife of Jeff Alvis). Her second marriage to a man named Halstone/Holstone left one son, Joseph W. Holstone, b. Oct. 12, 1866, d. May 23, 1895. Joe married Laura Eloise Dement.
After Joe's death Laura married William Oliver Wood and they had Pearl, Edna, Oliver, Floyd, Dillard, and Willie Mae. He is buried in Old City Cemetery in Caldwell, Burleson Co. Texas. He was the father of my grandmother, Myrtle Holstone Barnett. Myrtle was the only child of Joe Holstone and Laura Eloise Dement and a half-sister to her Wood brothers and sisters.
Joe was also the half-brother of Jeff and Sarah Alvis's daughters, Susan (Sue) b. abt. 1854 and Margaret Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. 1859.
The Alvis family was probably originally in Hawkins Co., TN, but Jeff, Sarah and their daughters came from Cherokee Co. TN (census 1860) to Texas. Jeff served in the 7th Texas and was killed May 28, 1864 near New Hope, Ga.
After his death, all Jeff and Sarah's land was sold, and Sarah married Mr. Halstone/Holstone and Joseph was born. She was unhappy and left her girls with a family named King, when she moved with her husband and son to Wallaceville on the Trinity River where she died about 1870.
Her daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) married (1879) Jefferson Davis Autrey, son of Miles Autrey and Margaret. In 1880 they lived in Burleson Co. TX, and Joe Holstone lived with them.
Elizabeth and Jeff had 6 children of their own: Duard, Nannie (died in childhood), Annie Esther, Miles, Lillie Mae, Sallie Elsie, and Bertha Eula.
Elizabeth's sister Susan (Sue) married Henry Autrey on January 9, 1879, and in the 1880 census they were listed as living next door to Elizabeth and Jeff Autrey.
I would very much like to hear from anyone familiar with this family, particularly Barbara Lee.
