You might check cemetery where Martha was buried, see if Gus is buried there, too. Looks like Gus died between the 1900 census and 1910 census. He may not show up on the above death index, even though it says as early as 1890. TX didn't officially state wide begin to keep vital records until 1903 and some counties didn't get on board until a little later.
You get the full name of Gus from DCs for some of his children. Note cemetery in Van Zandt where some were buried, Edom Cemetery. Look for Gus there.
