Thomas Jefferson Knight was born in 27 June 1827 probably in Paris, Bedford Co., TN, and in 1848 married Martha Ann Sanders (18 Oct 1832 Bedford Co., Tn. - 14 Feb 1880 Upshur County, Texas) in Shelby, TX. There is some reason to believe the father of Thomas Jefferson was Solomon Jefferson Knight (1810 Tn. aft 1851 Upshur Co., Tx.)and Elizabeth (1820 NC Aug. 1850 Upshur Co., Tx.). Martha was a Citizen of Texas when it was a Republic, the daughter of William Hamilton Sanders 1805 1836, and Mary Elizabeth Hooper 1811 1853. Thomas J. Knight and wife Martha sold land in Shelby County to her Mother and Step-Father, Elizabeth and James Alford in 1850. On 1852 Simeon R. Knight, possibly a brother of Thomas or Solomon sold land to Thomas Jefferson Knight in Upshur County where the family resided the remainder of their lives. On 5 Jun 1852 Martha and T.J.Knight transacted a land sale in Travis County from Wm. J. Sanders (her brother) which was his portion of estate of their father Wm. H. Sanders for serving in Texas War of Independence. On 1 March 1862 Thomas Jefferson Knight enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War in Gilmer under THOMAS J. JOHNSON as part of Co. G., 17th Tx. Cavalry, MOORE'S Reg. and took part in numerous battles including Arkansas Post, Missionary Ridge, Chickamauga, & the Battle of Lookout Mt.TN. On 27 November 1881, after Martha's death and burial at Grice Cemetery in Upshur County, Thomas Jefferson Knight married Barbara Grider in Upshur Co., Texas per File name: 976.4 A1 No. 5 Library of Congress. On 31 Jul 1882 in Upshur County, Texas T.J. Knight and all heirs of his wife sold land to his son-in-law, Whitfield A. Wade. Two of his daughters married Whitfield Wade, first Mirah Elizabeth (1855-1885) and after her death in a fall from a horse to her sister Addie Knight (1863-1929).
Thomas Jefferson Knight died at age 65 on 31 Jan 1892 at his home in Enon, Upshur, Texas and is also buried at Grice Cemetery not far away.
