Probably just a large Texas ranch!
If you look at the census page-"Hammill Ranch", "Crabtree Ranch","Dykes Ranch",then "Shaw Ranch",then "Elliott Ranch"--and a days ride to each one by the census taker-lots of land between houses. At that time the county had only existed for 4 years,and it's only inhabitants were 23 ranches.
