Russell Windle, Just noted your 10-2-08 post on Capt Smith's 1st Mounted Texas Volunteers and that a James Ringo was a member of that unit. It might be interesting to some that, Martin Ringo, father of John Peters Ringo, the famous Johnny Ringo, the gunfighter, also served in the Mexican War. Martin Ringo enlisted on 6-7-1846 as a private in Company C, 1st Regiment, of Doniphan's Missouri Mounted Infantry at Fort Levenworth, KS. In 1873, Johnny and his younger brother, Martin Albert Ringo, were in Texas. Were they became involved in the HooDoo Cattle War. Johnny's brother was killed in this war. Johnny killed 3 of those involved in his brother's death and fled from justice in Texas. He later ended up in Tombstone, AZ, where in comitted sucide on 7-13-1882. It may be possible that the James Ringo, with Capt Smith's unit was from Kentucky? I am a Ringo family genealogists and would be interested.
