While I can't shed any light on this fellow's CSA service or lack thereof, his name is a bit of a puzzle. In the 1860 census of Henderson Co., TX it is given as "Columbus M." with an age of either 7 or 9, it's difficult to decipher. IF this record is correct then a birth span would be roughly 1851-1853. In the 1870 census he is enumerated only as "C. Dunwoody", age 23, born TN, married to Elizabeth, no children. He was living next door to his parents. This would give a birth year of roughly 1847. In the 1900 census he is enumerated as "C. C." still married to Elizabeth. In this record his birth is given as Oct. 1846. Lastly, his death certificate gives his name as "Commodore Calvin Dunwoody" born 9 Oct. 1846. So, 1846-1847 seems to be the most likely DOB which would put this fellow as about 17 yrs. old IF it is correct that he enlisted 1863 at Galveston in Capt. Sam Evans Company, Griffin's Battalion. You know, I have run across a couple of other instances where some fellow is on the rolls of a UCV camp yet nothing at all can be found to verify service. In both cases I looked at, the units that the persons claimed to have joined have virtually no history. I don't know if that is the case here but it does make one wonder. Wish I could be of more help but..... Rick (SCV Harrisburg Camp 645)
