UGH! I had to go back and look and you're correct, Arlis E. is a daughter. My vision isn't the best due to cattaracts, making this even more of a challenge.
I hadn't seen the Hill listing in the census either, however I'm convinced that the family 'lore' is correct as I have a copy of the admission form for Buckner's Orphange, filled out by my grt grandfather, for Ellen and Evaline, and HE listed his wife and their mother as LEONA WALLACE. Also, on his death certificate, my grandmother listed Ola as HIS mother.
Might someone know how I could possibly check indian attacks in Central Texas? The tale of that wagon train massacre was passed down from Leona,through my grandmother and mother, and based on the fact that Leona was 14 y/o when she married my great grandfather, I'd guestimate that the wagon train massacre ocurred in the mid 1890's. From what I've read, it appears that should have been an isolated event as most of the indian problems had pretty much ceased by then.
