John Lee Tomlinson was b. 28 May 1875 (1877, 1900 census), Bear Springs, Stewart Co., TN, d. 17 Dec 1954, Smackover, Union Co., AR; m. Mamie Mullins, b. 21 Mar 1885, Stewart; d. 26 Oct 1971, Greenville, SC, daughter of Richard Mullins, b. Galway, Ireland, and sister of Sheriff Frank Mullins of Stewart.

John was a son of John White Tomlinson, a CW veteran, b. 15 June 1830(48, 1880, Dist. 7, Clark Furnace, Stewart Co., TN); d. by 1900 (not on census); m.abt 1868 Missouri Daniels, b. Mar 1848, TN, d. 10 July 1932, Stewart, of pneumonia, daughter of Joseph Daniels and Elizabeth Bird. She lived in the old Tomlinson house on Leatherwood Creek in Stewart.(See Stewart Co., TN History, 277)Elizabeth Bird was a daughter of Henry D. Bird and ? Anderson of Stewart and granddaughter of Drewry D. Bird and Lissia Deberry, who migrated from Montgomery Co., NC to Stewart ca. 1805. This should dispell the legend in SC that John Lee's mother was a full-blooded Cherokee.

John W. was a son of Thomas Elliott Tomlinson, b. 6 Feb 1796, Waxhaws, Lancaster Co., SC; d. abt 1874, Stewart Co., TN; m. 22 Nov 1822, Stewart, Laney Cathey, b. 30 Oct 1798, d. aft 1880, daughter of George Cathey and Eleanor Honer Armstrong Cathey Lightfoot.

Thomas E. was a son of William Tomlinson, Sr., b. 6 Mar 1769, Brunswick Co., VA; d. 22 Aug 1851, Stewart Co., TN; m. 1 ca. 1795, Lancaster Co., TN, Mary (Polly) Elliott; m. 2 ca. 1824/5, Stewart, Lucy Mallory. Land on the south side of Twelve Mile Creek near the Catawba, granted by Andrew McCorkle to Thomas Eliot in 1781 and left by Thomas Eliot, dec'd to James Eliot, his son, was conveyed to William Tomlinson 6 Jan 1795. (Lancaster Co., SC DB F, 19, B 285-6)William Tomlinson and his wife Mary sold it 5 Dec 1799. You will find other mentions of William and Polly in Brent H. Holcomb, Lancaster Co., SC Deeds, 1787-1811.William was designated Sr. to differentiate him from a nephew, William Tomlinson, Jr., b. 1 Sep 1755; d. 1 Dec 1826-5 Feb 1827, Stewart, son of John Tomlinson, III, and Rebecca Rosser.

William, Sr. (and John Tomlinson, III)were sons of John Tomlinson, Jr., b. by 1720, probably in Prince George or Surry Co., VA; d. 6 Aug 1781-21 Jan 1782, Greensville Co., VA; m. by 1745 Susanna (Tatum?), b. by 1728, VA?; d. 9 Jan 1799-1800, Lancaster Co., SC?
John, Jr. lived in Surry, Sussex, Brunswick and Greensville Cos., VA; migrated to Lancaster Co., SC before the Revolutionary War, and then fled back to Virginia when the war heated up in SC.

John, Jr. was a son of John Tomlinson, Sr., b. by 1695, probably in Charles City Co., VA; d. 19 Dec 1760-20 May 1762, Sussex Co., VA. John, Sr. m. by 1739 Mary Chappell, but it is not clear whether she was the mother of his older children, including John, Jr.

John Lee Tomlinson had 10 children, 2 of whom died young. The others were Lillian, Paul Raymond (whose twin died at 3 days), Katherine, Rev. Woodrow Edward, Julia Marie, Maggie Beatrice, Jerry lee, Eugene Kenneth and Johnny, who d. at 8.
