Where was his wife from originally? She may have taken the children and moved "back" to be near family. And, that might have been out of Texas. Are you sure you have code correct for the Soundex? You don't give the surname, does it begin with a letter that might be mistaken for another capital letter? You'd be surprised how often an "S" and an "L" are mistaken one for the other. And, there are more like that. Have you tried the Bexar Co, TX genweb site, to see if anyone knows anything about the mental institution? Have you obtained his death certificate?
