If you go to Rootsweb's WorldConnect -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgihttp://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi -- type in Layton, Joshua, born South Carolina, second match [data base for jjsmith] has what looks like some documented information on the family. But, they show Joshua's wife as Clarinda and on the 1870 census it looks like Caroline to me.
Bartow Co, GA GenWeb site has quite a few items on Layton. One is a marriage for Henry and Mary, but shows 1 May 1892, could be a typo.
