In searching the 1880 census this might be James but I wouldn't count on it. Your James could still be somewhere between Alabama and Texas. There are too many James Moores in the 1870 Alabama census to go thru.

Since you know the death date of Thomas, I would acquire his death certificate along with James' and hopefully the informat will know the names of the parents.
