The term is MULLATO and many Indians were listed as white even if they "looked" Indian. On Thomas Leonard Moore born April 27 1885, his WWI draft registration there are 3 options White Negro or Oriental...so white is checked...He was Listed as Med height Med build and brown eyes and brown hair. Married to Mellie Jane Moore. IT IS TRUE THAT IN SOME CENSUS INDIANS WERE LISTED AS BLACK OR MULATTO. I was always told that my(father's side) family had Indian blood(reason for high cheekbones) but after 7+ years of research and going back to abt 1801 there is not one drop that can be documented or even hinted at. Turned out we were Irish & German ....My Mother's side is at a brick wall as her father was an Orphan, and her mother's family were English Mormon pioneers...I guess I will never find out. Not to say there wasn't any but I have noted that it became as fashionable to claim Indian Blood as it was at one time to deny it. Makes it hard on researchers...I suppose that DNA would be the only way to prove it and for me that isn't gonna happen. 1930 census for Thomas which you prob have Precinct 1, Shelby, Texas Thomas L Moore 43 Mellie Moore 36 Arlie J Moore 16 Lois A Moore 13 Drury S Moore 12 Jessie M Moore 10 Arvis L Moore 9 Lyna R Moore 7 Millie V Moore 3 1/12 the 1850 Shelby Texas census for a James Moore b 1826 ALA does not list race. It appears he worked for a Henry Ashton there are other Moore's also There is a James Moore(b abt 1867) family listed as black in the 1870 Shelby co Texas census there are 4 seperate Moore families in 1880 Shelby Texas census, 2 black and 2 white I don't think I helped you.
