Flaming Barn Claims lives of Brothers near Bowie
Two small boys were burned to death late Tuesday at their farm house east of Bowie when a corn crib in which they were playing caught fire. The boys, BOBBY BRADFORD, 4, and JAMES RUSSELL BRADFOR, 3, were sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. BEDFORD, who live nine miles east of Bowie.Survivors include the parents, eight brothers and sisters. The mother was placed under a doctor’s care.
Berry Family Reunion
Scenic Lugart Dam Park near Granite, Oklahoma was the site for the second annual Berry reunion held Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30. 64 members of the family were present for the reunion compared with 63 last year. The annual get-to-gather was organized two years ago when MRS. S. J. BERRY, mother of the group died at Granite, in order that members of the family might keep in touch with each other. Younger members of the group spent the time swimming, boating, riding and mountain climbing. Still younger members like little NELSON BERRY of Saint Jo kept members of the family busy getting acquainted with him, enjoying the attention. Saint Jo members attending were Mr. and Mrs. D. C. BERRY, W. M. BERRY, MRS. D. C. BERRY Jr., and son NELSON, and MISS BOBBY JEAN MCGRADY. Other relatives came from Chickasha, Okemah, Sayre, Clinton, Brinkman, Duncan, Granite and other points in Oklahoma and Amarillo, Texas.
Hildebrand and Pittman Children in Car Accident
Monday evening, the children of MRS. JOHN HILDEBRAND and Mr. and Mrs. N. W.PITMAN started out in the Pitman care to hunt rabbits in the Hildebrand pasture near Tyler Bluff on Route 2. Five of the children received injuries, two very seriously when they fell off the outside of the car. VELMA HILDEBRAND and ARLENE PITMAN were injured. WANDA JEAN PITMAN and Velma were taken to the hospital at Gainesville.
Mrs. WOODROW JONES and her brother-in-law J. B. JONES received serious injuries in a car collision. Wednesday night. They had started to Ada, Oklahoma to get Mrs. Jones’ husband when the accident occurred near DICK PIERCE’S place on Highway 82. Mrs. Jones was taken to the Gainesville hospital by occupants of a passing car. N
No serious injuries were sustained last Friday when the Chevrolet pickup driven by ULIS BURNS, city, collided with another pickup driven by MRS. STARLING EMBRY of Sivell’s Bend on the highway in front of Mr. Burns’ home. In the car with Mrs. Embry were two of her children and a little boy from Oklahoma City, visiting the family.
H. H. CARLILE reported that his skating rink would open Saturday night. HORACE WILLIASM of Bowie will be instructor and O. L. PERKINS of Decatur will manage in absence of the owner who will divide his time between his roller rinks in Saint Jo and Henrietta.
CORA JANET CLIFT
MRS. CORA JANET CLIFT, wife of J.G. CLIFT, died at the home of her daughter MRS. ELMER JOHNS Wednesday night after a short illness. Funeral services were held at the Bulcher church Thursday afternoon by Rev. J. CALVIN DENNIS and SHELBY WEST. Interment was in the Coker cemetery arranged by Scott Bros. Mrs. Clift was born July 22, 1856 in Cape Jersey, Missouri, daughter of CHARLES and ELIZABETH HARRIS. She joined in the Methodist Church in 1873 at the Oakland Church in Hopkins County, Texas. Most of her life was spent in the Bulcher community. She is survived by her husband, J. G. CLIFT, four daughters, MRS. J. H. JONES, MRS. LEE POTEET, MRS. GEORGE PARKHILL and MRS. ELMER JOHNS and one son W. J. CLIFT. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
Long Time Resident of Dye Mound Died
MRS. MARY SAMPLES died at the home of her daughter MRS. W.B. CASH, five miles west of Saint Jo Saturday morning, July 29 after a long illness. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Dye Mound Church of Christ with Elder JOHN RAYMOND officiating. Pallbearers were N. R. JOHNSON, BILL BOWEN, CLAUDE LOPER, and BARNEY BROGDON, ROY WADE and TROY WADE of Norman, Oklahoma. Interment was in Dye Mound cemetery arranged by Scott Bros. Mrs. Samples was buried beside her husband who passed away May 10, 1939. Mrs. Samples has made her home in the Dye Mound community for over 50 years and has been a member of the Church of Christ all during that time. Survivors are three daughters, MRS. C. A. WADE of Norman, Oklahoma, MRS. SARAH GREENWOOD of Wichita Falls and MRS. CASH, two sons HENRY SAMPLES of Cement, Oklahoma and BUNK SAMPLES of Saint Jo and one brother WILLIE GANN of Marlow, Oklahoma.

Accident Victims Improved
Little VELMA HILDEBRAND and WANDA JEAN PITMAN, who were seriously injured Tuesday of last week, were reported to be improving.
JOE HUTSON of Route Two, whose leg was broken in an accident last week, is improving.
MRS. WOODROW JONES is reported as improving.
Honoring MISS DORIS LAUDERDALE, whose birthday was July 6, and CECIL ROBERTS of Gainesville, whose birthday was July 9, a dinner was given by Miss Lauderdale’s mother, MRS. BROWDER LAUDERDALE, in the tea room of the Palace café Sunday. After the dinner, the following guests went to Gainesville to see “Goodbye Mr. Chips:” Misses ELIZABETH JANE ALDRIEDGE, OLA LEE MCINTIRE, ELOISE, DORIS and DOROTHY JO LAUDERDALE, Messrs. BILL FAVORS, DAN LUNDLEN, GEORGE L. LAUDERDALE, ROY W. BELLAH, and CECIL ROBERTS.
The first bale of cotton for 1939 was brought in by J. G. CANNON and Sons near Caps Corner.
MRS. ROSA TUCKER announce that the former BERNICE’S Beauty Shop on the East Side of the square will be open for business August 12 under the new name Saint Jo Beauty Saloon. Mrs. Tucker will manage the salon which will be operated by MISS LOUISE CRENSHAW, who comes here from Nocona, an expert beautician.
Foster-Wallace
A wedding of interest was that of MISS ALTO FOSTER, daughter of MRS. NOVELLA WEBB, and JOHN W. WALLACE of Dallas which took place August 5 at the First Baptist Church of Marietta, Oklahoma wit Rev. JAMES V. GRAY reading the vows. Eh bride wore a navy blue sheer with white accessories. Mrs. Wallace was reared in the Gladys community and attended Saint Jo High School.

MRS. W. H. BROWNING is making sweet pickles from peaches grown in her orchard for the Tipton Orphans Home.
I had the pleasure of seeing the largest variety of canned fruits and vegetables I’ve seen this year in Mr. and Mrs. C. W. BOYDSTON’S cellar. Every kind of vegetable that grows here, except okra, was represented in the display of about 400 jars. The Boydstons live on the N. H. MARTIN lease on the King farm on Route 2.
MISS MARY JANE CONLEY of Oklahoma City was honored when her aunt MISS RUTH SCOTT entertained with a party Friday morning at her home on West Howell Street. Refreshments were served to Misses BOBBIE JEAN MCGRADY, CONSTANCE MELTON, TOMMIE JO HOOVER, CHARLENE WILSON, FRANCES MAE DUNBAR, JO HOOVER, DIANNIE RICHIE and the guest MARY JANE CONLEY.
CHRISTINE NORTHCUTT
CHRISTINE NORTHCUTT, infant daughter of Mrs. NAOMI NORTHCUTT, died August 5, 1939 at her home near Forestburg after several days of illness. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Perryman cemetery with Rev. GEORGE MITCHELL officiating, arranged by E. B. Dunbar Funeral Home. Surviving are the mother and one brother, ELMER, grandparents and other relatives.
MRS. ELLEN MOREHEAD, who lived in the Starkey community for 20 years until 1936, left Tuesday for her new home at College Station, after visiting her children in California, friends and relatives in Cooke and Montague counties and relatives in Oklahoma. To her the Saint Jo Tribune is like getting a letter from home so she renewed her subscription for a year. She will have charge of several college boys in her own home at College Station.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. WEBB had as guests Mr. and Mrs. LOUIS C. WEBB of Burkburnett, Miss MARY MAE BAILEY of Ranger, and C. M. SLAUGHER of Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Their daughter LORAINE WEBB is visiting at Ryan, Oklahoma.
Miss VIRGINIA LAUDERDALE, who has been in Dallas, was taken to the Baylor Hospital for a major operation.
Mrs. S. A. GORDON has as guests, a niece MRS. ELLA THOMPSON of Sulphur Springs, Oklahoma and a granddaughter MRS. EUNICE SHORTING and small son of Toronto, Canada. After a visit here, Mrs. Shorting will be accompanied home by her father CLAUD TUCK who visit in Canada with Mrs. Shorting and his youngest son TAYLOR.
Mrs. T. N. FIELDS left for Celina, Kansas to visit her niece MRS. ARRINGTON, the former SYBIL WYLIE. Mrs. Fields will be accompanied by her sister MRS. D. W. WYLIE and children JOSEPHINE and BILLIE of Wichita Falls.
MRS. DAVE MCCURTY and son of Plainview are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. GEORGE ROGERS and family.
STANLEY SUMMERS, who attended George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, returned to his home north of town. Driving through with him was R. R. LAMB of Los Angeles who will remain with his aunt MRS. CLYDE YETTER and family for a visit.

Bonita News
Another homecoming day for Bonita was a happy occasion. A feature that was especially enjoyed by old timers was a miniature Bonita as it was a number of years ago. This feature was prepared by MRS. J. W. LATHAM and MISS CLARA GOLDSMITH. Possibly the oldest “old timer” was MRS. NANCY HAGGARD.

CHESTER HOLMES, in charge of the Planet Petroleum Co.’s interests in the Desdemona oil field in Eastland County, came to visit home folks.

WILL GEER and their sons ROBERT, GEORGE Jr. and baby boy BILL motored over from Gainesville to Saint Jo in two handsome Studebaker cars and spent two days with relatives, returning on the train. The cars were left here with H. D. FIELD and MRS. NELLIE SKELTON who bought them from ROBERT who has the agency for Studebaker cars.
D. C. BERRY was in Dallas to see about getting repairs for his engine at the light plant which broke down last week.
FRED MEADOR, CAREY MEEK and ARTHUR PHILLIPS were in Kansas City with a shipment of cattle.
MRS. MOLLIE HALEY of Ector, Missouri arrived to visit relatives, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. PHILLIPS.
MRS. W. E. SCOTT and little daughter EYLA NELL went to Duncan, Oklahoma to visit MRS. J. P. SAMPSON.
MRS. B. S. KIMBRELL and son BAILEY of Washington, D. C. are here to visit her brother and sister-in-law Mr. and Mrs. C. F. PHILLIPS.
MRS. C. W. VARNEY and children, who spent two months with relatives in Saint Jo, left for Duncan, Oklahoma where Mr. Varney has moved from Norman, Oklahoma. She was accompanied to Duncan with her mother MRS. JOE ALDRIEDGE and her nephew, BIGE DAIVS who are visiting there.
MRS. JNO. T. LAUDERDALE went to Gainesville to be with her husband who was taken seriously ill there at the home of their son TURNER LAUDERDALE. She was accompanied by her son S.M. LAUDERDALE who returned home.

W. FRANK SLAUGHTER
Saint Jo was shocked Thursday by the sudden death of one of its well known citizens, W. FRANK SLAUGHTER, who passed away early Thursday morning at his rooms in the ED DOWD apartments on Decatur Street. His death was attributed to heart trouble. He had been under treatment for heart trouble for some months. His death was discovered when LOUIS EVANS, waiter at the Gem Café, took his lunch to him room and received no reply to repeated knocks. Funeral services will be held at the residence of his mother at 4 p.m. Friday, August 18, with Rev. LEON F. MILNER officiating. Pallbearers: ED DOWD, CLIFFORD WARE, PAUL ROBERTS, R. T. BUCK, C. N. TURNER, and GEORGE PEERY. Interment will be in the Mountain Park Cemetery arranged by E. N. Dunbar.
Mr. Slaughter was born January 3, 1877 at Bonham, The family lived in Indian Territory a few years and moved to Saint Jo in 1889 where he was associated with his father in a grocery store here. About thirty years ago he moved to Idabel where he was in the jewelry and theatre business. Three years ago he came back to Saint Jo with his jewelry work and has been her since that time. He attended school at Saint Jo and finished college at Van Alstyne. Survivors are his mother MRS. MARY SLAUGHTER, a brother, LUTHER SLAUGHTER of Saint Jo and a sister MRS. J. A. HALL of Muleshoe, Texas.
Mrs. EDNA EVANS GRIFFIS
Mrs. EDNA EVANS GRIFFIS, 83, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, wife of the late J. W. GRIFFIS, died at the home of her daughter, MRS. J. G. MAY on East Boggess Street in this city on Monday, August 14. Her passing came suddenly as she was well, hearty, and happy just a few minutes before the death angel touched her with the summons “Come Up Higher.” Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Baptist Church of which she was a member for a number of years. Dr. C. E. WILBANKS, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Ardmore, officiated and was assisted by Rev. PAUL THOMPSON, pastor of the local church. The song service was given by a quartet, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. CUNNINGHAM, Mrs. LUKE GRANT and T. C. DAVIS, with Mrs. GEORGE WRIGHT at the piano. Interment, arranged by Scott Bros., was in Mountain Park beside her husband who died in 1916. Pallbearers were FRED HOLLAND, E. N. DUNBAR, P. E. REDMAN, LEE HUSBAND, R. W. DONNELL, S. C. ROACH, LEETON PHILLIPS, GEORGE D. PEDIGO, JOE FARRIS, J. F. REARDON and A. THOMPSON of Ardmore and D. FISHBECK of Duncan, Oklahoma.
Survivors are five daughters, MRS. M. F. MELTON of Ada, Oklahoma, MRS. W. F. PRICE and MRS. J. G. MAY of Saint Jo, MRS. DORA LAUDERDALE of Ardmore, with whom she made her home, and MRS. H. O. LOVE of Dallas; six sons; JOHN A. GRIFFIS of Ardmore, H.H. GRIFFIS of Waco, B. F. GRIFFIS of Belcherville, H. C. GRIFFIS of Ada, Oklahoma, W. P. GRIFFIS of Wichita Falls and T. HARRISON GRIFFIS of Oklahoma City, 39 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, 1 brother RUFUS EVANS of Waco, two sisters, MRS. ELIZA EDWARDS of Haskell and MRS. VERONA GRIFFIS of Waco. All the children, her brother, and several of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were here for the funeral.
Mrs. Griffis, who before her marriage was MISS EDNA EVANS, was born February 14, 1856 at Springfield, Logan County, Illinois. She married J. W. GRIFFIS 1871 in McClelland County, Texas. In 1873, Mr. and Mrs. Griffis came to Cooke County and homesteaded land near the city of Muenster now stands. In 1893 the Griffis family came to Saint Jo and lived here until after Mr. Griffis’ death. In 1919, Mrs. Griffis moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma and resided there for 20 years. About a month ago, she came to Saint Jo for a visit with her daughters and her many friends here.

MISS RACHEL BEATRICE HUTSON and AUBREY BROWN were married in a quiet ceremony at Jonata Wednesday evening, August 16, with Rev. PAUL THOMPSON of the First Baptist Church officiating. Attending the couple were her sister MRS. DUPREE LYONS and her brother VERNON HUTSON. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. PINK HUTSON of Illinois Bend and the groom is the son of C. E. BROWN of Saint Jo. Immediately after the reading of the vows, the couple went to the home of the bride’s parents for the wedding supper. They will make their home with his parents for a short time before getting rooms here. He is employed with the Wichita Cotton Oil Company in Saint Jo.
Pastel shades of astors and water lilies in profusion were used to decorate the reception suite of the home of MRS. M. L. DRABLING when she and MRS. CLYDE W. YETTER were co-hostesses for an informal coffee given Saturday morning for MISS MARCYLE KING who is to become the bride of WILLIAM NEALE of Denton on September 3.

Rev. and Mrs. B. HELM, 337 East Sycamore Street, Denton, enjoyed a family reunion Sunday. The affairs was attended by 6 children, 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and other relatives made a total of 83. On August 10th, the couple had been married 60 years.

Three Hurt When Car Hits Calf on Highway
MRS. SYBIL CRUMP, LANE HOWELL and PETE PHILLIPS were victims of an accident last Sunday night when their car struck a calf on the highway between Belcherville and Nocona.

At a meeting at the residence of J. L. MCGREGOR, a new chapter of the Texas Association of the Deaf was organized. LEO L.
