Hi Norma! (Yes, I read your other postings in your posting history.)
Since you are a beginner, I'm going to get you a little farther back. But at the end I am going to give you some reference suggestions, because there is a lot of look ups still to do (these were BIG families!)
You previous posting spoke of a nice gentleman sending you the 1920 census. There are a couple of things you did not include on your transcription--maybe he didn't include them or maybe you didn't. But I believe they are interesting and worth noting.
1920 Census, Alleghany Co. PA, 21st WD, Pittsburgh
T625, R1527, p 84
(you always want to note the "citing" for the census--the "T" is series, the R is Roll and the P is page number)
1419 Chateau St.
house 32/family 37 (usually written as 32/37)
Gardner, Milton?, head, rents, 57, PA-PA-PA, works as clerical for creamery
"", Sarah J., sister, 77, PA-PA-PA
house 32/family 38 (which means same house, different family)
Fleming, Eugene A., head, rents, 30, PA-MA-Ire, salesman, whole sale ?bakery??
"", Ella A., wife, 31. PA-PA-Ire
"", M. Audrey, dau, 10, PA-PA-PA
"", Dorothy J., dau, 3 3/12, PA-PA-PA
"", John, son, 1 6/12. PA-PA-PA
Schmidt, Mary A., sister, married, 47, CT-MA-Ire, baker in bakery
32/39
?Misisuck?, Will F., head, 23, PA-Ger, Ger, clerical, trust co.
"", Larcia P., wife, 24, PA-PA-Ger
What is intersting is 1) the street address--and this looks to be a multi-family residence 2)Eugene's sister is living with them...and notice she is listed as born in CT (which makes Eugene in 1930 look less like a discrepency and more like they are somehow connected with CT), and 3)There sure is a big gap between Audrey and Dorothy. Hmmm.
On 1930 it is also interesting (And I won't transcribe the whole thing here) that Eugene (39 yrs)says he was married for the first time at 17, Eadna (38 yrs) says she was married for the first time at 34. (And I bet Eadna is really Edna). So Eugene has definitely been married at least twice...once to Ella and once to Eadna.
Now, on to new stuff.
His WWI Draft Registration lists him as Eugene Anthony Fleming, DOB 6-15-1889, born in Pittsburgh, living at 1401 ?Langford? in the 21st Ward of Pittsburgh, salesman with "The Hein Co.", has a wife and 2 children (see date below...Dorothy would have been born by then), married, requesting a deferment because of dependents, tall, medium build, blonde hair and blue eyes. Dated 6/5/17
1910 census, Alleghany Co, PA, 21st Ward, Pittsburgh
T624, R1307, p27
1252 Ridge
26/37
Fleming, Richard, head, 60, mar. once, mar 37 yrs, MA-Ire-Ire, buffer, casket works
"", Mary C., wife, 55. mar. once, mar 37 yrs., mother of 17 children/10 living, Ire-Ire-Ire
"", Louise C., dau, 33. single, CT-MA-Ire
"", Mabel J., dau, 26, single, PA-MA-Ire, stenographer, ?powder works?
"", Eugene A., son, 20, mar. once, mar 1 year, PA-MA-Ire
driver, laundry
"", William R., son, 16, single, PA-MA-Ire
"", Thomas, P. son, 15, single, PA-MA-Ire
"", Frances E., son, 14, single, PA-MA-Ire
Wonder where Eugene's wife is? Home or hospital having Audrey? Gone? Is this wife Ella or someone else? Also note that Mary has had 17 children, 10 of whom are living (bless her heart...losing 7 babies). If you are interested, you should check the 1920 census for William, (I couldn't find him), Thomas (I might have found him married in the 20th ward) and Frances (married to Olga in the 27th Ward).
1900 Census, Alleghany Co., PA, Glenfield Borough
T623, R1367, p 255
88/88
Fleming, Richard, head, 49, b. Mar 1851, mar 27 years, MA-Ire-Ire, coffin maker, Rents home
"", Mary C., wife, 45, b. Jan. 1855, mar. 27 years, mother of 15/11 living, immigrated 1864, 36 years in US, Ire-Ire-Ire
"", Louise C., dau, 23, b. Feb. 1877, CT-MA-Ire
"", Mabel J., dau, 17, b. Apr. 1883, PA-MA-Ire
"", George S., son, 15, b. Apr. 1885, PA-MA-Ire
"", Eugene A., son, 10, b. June 1889, PA-MA-Ire
"", Edward O., son, 8, b. Jan. 1892, PA-MA-Ire
"", William R., son, 6, b. Jan. 1894,PA-MA-Ire
"", Thomas P., son, 5, b. Jan. 1895, PA-MA-Ire
"", Frances E., son, 4, b. Feb. 1896, PA-MA-Ire
So! Now you have an immigration date for Mary. You have a rough year of marriage for Richard and Mary. You know that they probably moved from CT to PA between 1877 and 1883. And you know that they are probably on the 1880 census (the 1890 census was destroyed by fire).
So you have TONS of leads now. Here are the references I promised:
The entire 1880 census is online free at the LDS (Latter Day Saints or the Mormons) site
www.familysearch.org
on the right side in the middle is "search the Census"--click on US and go from there. I did find them there. Let me know if you have trouble. (But I am already typing so much--and you should have some fun finding some things!)
I will strongly urge you to check with your local library to see if they have a Heritage Quest subscription you can use online for free (Texas does, I believe Georgia does, as well as quite a few others). It has all the censuses as images and most are indexed. You have a lot of tracking to do!
Check out the US Gen Web (I feel like a broken record...that is one of my favorites and so many beginners don't know about it!).
www.usgenweb.com
They have sites for every state and every county in the nation. It is free...and volunteer driven, so the results vary. But explore around and see what you might find. Also check out (there is ususally a link on the page) to the corresponding GenWeb Archives, which has additional information. So explore!
Cyndi's list is like a card catalog if the genealogy sites on the Web. It is huge--and can be daunting. But worth a look.
Now all that being said (and typed) there are things that REALLY confuses me is when you said in the first posting:
"John Sr's mother, Mrs. John Richards, resided on Wheeling Street, in Lancaster, Ohio."
Her name was Mrs. John Richards? Did you mean Mrs. John Richard FLEMING, or has she remarried (wild coincidence). But if she is Mrs. John Richard Fleming, then she is the wife of John Richard Fleming Sr., not his mother. Or is she really John Richard Sr.'s mother, in which case she would be, at least at some point, Mrs. Eugene A. Fleming. And hmmm...Ohio?
Secondly, a whole lot is riding on the birth date of Eugene's John corresponding with the date of your John who dies in Las Vegas. Probably a little more than I feel comfortable with. On the up side, the middle name Richard is understood (names after his grandfather)...but there are a bunch of John Flemings floating around PA in that time span. My advice...be very careful and get that death certificate! (If it says father's name Eugene, you are home free!).
One last note. If he was 48 years old and stationed in El Paso, I would hazard a guess (to put it mildly) that he was career military. And remeber, that was during Viet Nam. You might be able to get military records from the Air Force. Could your brother have been listed as a military dependent?
Well, I have gone on WAY too long. Check those sites, learn everything you can, and get that death certificate. And be patient. This stuff doesn't happen overnight.
Good luck and Happy Hunting!
Andrea
