On the 1900 and 1910 census there is a James W. Mason, b VA, with wife and children in Mills Co, TX. Maybe a brother to your John. But, it looks like your John W. was in Cooke Co, TX.

Although the query was posted in 2000, I checked Bobby's message history and Bobby has posted in 2006, so I would post response, compare information.
