[Thomas YARRELL2001.FTW]
Thomas Yarrell, at a very young age ran away and joined the Confederate Army, but was found to be too young
even for a Drummer Boy and was dismissed. He traveled to Milan County, Texas. By 1868, he had found a
location on an open prairie with no settlers in sight, put up a building and began business as a Merchant. A
caravan of settlers came from Alabama and other places. The community of Yarrellton was built around Thomas
Yarrell's store. Thomas moved to Belton, Texas and bought interest in a wholesale grocery firm. He added a
savings bank (Yarrell Savings Bank) which paid a four percent per annum interest rate and the grocery firm was
named Thomas Yarrell Wholesale Grocers.
In 1907, Thomas chartered The People's National Bank of Belton, Texas, as President, with a capital of $50,000.
Thomas Yarrell, Jr. was Cashier of this bank.
