Hugh,

This is the extent of the information I have so far on the Canadays. It all comes from Census records.

1900 census Hopkins Co, TX:

Canaday, J.A., h, b Mar 1860, 40, M 2 yrs, b TX, unk, unk
" Addie, w, b Feb 1867, 33, M 2 yrs, 6 ch, 5 lvg, b NC, SC, SC
" Freddie, s, b Dec 1885, 14, b NC, NC, NC
" Mabel, d, b Jun 1892, 7, b NC, NC, NC
" Mayflower, d, b OCT 1898, 1, b TX, TX, NC

1880 census in neighboring Franklin Co, TX, pg 445 A:

William CANNADAY Self M Male W 61 NC Farmer NC NC
Lury CANNADAY Wife M Female W 53 AL Keeping House AL AL
John CANNADAY Son S Male W 20 TX Laborer NC AL
Lumar CANNADAY Son S Male W 12 TX Laborer NC AL
Martha CANNADAY Dau S Female W 28 TX Boarder TN TN

Page 441 A, I would guess this a brother to the above William:

Matt. CANNADAY Self M Male W 60 NC Farmer NC NC
Mary CANNADAY Wife M Female W 44 TN Keeping House SC TN
Curtis CANNADAY Son S Male W 19 TX Laborer NC TN
Callisty CANNADAY Dau S Female W 17 TX At Home NC TN
Layton CANNADAY Son S Male W 15 TX Laborer NC TN
Wade CANNADAY Son S Male W 13 TX Laborer NC TN
Cass CANNADAY Son S Male W 11 TX Laborer NC TN
David CANNADAY Son S Male W 9 TX NC TN
William CANNADAY Son S Male W 8 TX NC TN
John CANNADAY Son S Male W 6 TX NC TN
Troy CANNADAY Son S Male W 4 TX NC TN

1870 census Titus (parent county for Franklin):

Canady[sic], William, 40, b NC land 1500/personal 500
" Martha 37, b IL
" Margaret, 25, b TN
" John 11, b TX
" ____, 1, b TX
Johnson, Mollie, 14, b TX
" Furgeson, Frankin[sic], 21, b TX - pers 100

Next door:

Canady, Jasper, 26, b TN - ld 500/pers 700
" Elizabeth, 28, b AL
" Sallie, 2, b TX
[Also in the county are David 47, James 57 & Matthew 50 all b NC, looks like brothers, or at least cousins.]

1860 census Titus Co, TX:

Canady, William, 42, b NC - ld 700/pers 808
" Martha, E., 28, b IL
" Stephen J., 19, b TN
" Margaret L., 17, b TN
" Almida L., 4, b TX
" John A.J., 6/12, b TX
" William H.H., 6/12, b TX

Looks like your John had a twin. I would say Martha is the mother of the 3 youngest children, but the older ones probably had a different mother. I don't have access to online census index for 1850. Also in the county are German 48, b NC and Matthew 40 b NC.

Joan Rambo found this info and posted it for me. Do you think it can be traced further using online records?

~Brett
