You didn't include any dates, or approximate dates, in your query. You say Jake died young, but not when, so hard to tell about when he was born. Have you found the family on a census record showing Jake owning land? When the final sale of that land was made all heirs would have to sign off to give clear title to the buyer. And, depending on the time period, if Jake left minor children the court might appoint a guardian, yes even if the mother was alive. That guardian was to report back to the court of the sale of any of that land, to protect the rights of those minor children. There might be all kinds of court records on that family if the mother later was entered into an asylum, too.
