Maybe searching the land records would answer some of your questions. When Nathan died, his wife, if she was still alive would be the heir, if she was deceased then children of Nathan, not his grandchildren would be next in line. I'm thinking Hugh was still alive when Nathan died, and he would be listed among the heirs. Worth some research. At least it might tell you where Hugh was living at that time.
